I stepped out of my normal routine last night and saw a movie. Not just any movie, but a classic movie that reminds me of lots of good things including Paris, love, music, mopeds, and mystery. Diva by Jean-Jaques Beineix is full of all of these good things and more.
I was reminded by a friend that although it was technically a movie, I read the subtitles, so I'm allowed to write about it. (Technicalities have never stopped me before!)
There is just something magical about the way all the parts in this come together. It has the potential to be heavy, and while the components of the movie include fear, dissatisfaction, corruption, murder, prostitution (and possibly underage relationships?) the end result is playful rather than dark.
The characters seem to contain a sense of grace and their search for meaning in everyday things buoys them up. They are able to exchange kindness for kindness and make real friendships in the midst of the conflict.
And there are moped chase scenes, too.
