HIGHLY RECOMMENDED:
Tithe: a modern faerie tale
Valiant: a modern tale of faerie
Ironside: a modern faery's tale
Holly Black has a great series of books for teens that embrace the same slightly terrifying but fundamentally compelling world that she helped to create for younger readers in "Spiderwick Chronicles." Aimed at an older audience, with the same themes of fitting in and embracing strangeness, with dating and romance thrown in. Of course, lots of faeries, trolls, goblins, nymphs, elves, etc., etc.
I love these!
RECOMMENDED:
SMAX by Alan Moore
I'm a sucker for any "Top Ten" related storyline, I'll confess. That said, I really enjoyed this tangent into explaining how Smax came to be. Giant, blue, and surly, there is a lot to explain, and as usual, Alan Moore is a master at wrapping up without sacrificing the strangeness that characterizes his writing. Jeff Smax is an angry guy, and is given the opportunity to be slightly less so.
Chiaroscuro by McGreal, Truog, Rawson and Kayanan
I have no history with DaVinci, and I can't say that this fills in gaps, explains everything, or even that it is gross misrepresentation of a great man. I can say that the story was well told and that I was drawn into this comic with all of the intensity of its characters. Thought provoking and provoked more interest in both DaVinci and Michaelangelo.
