Although I devoured the "Uglies" series like I was eating a vat of mango pudding from India Palace , I was not all that impressed with Scott Westerfeld's abilities in the realm of character development. He writes some good action, which I love, but the characters always felt so flat it was hard to care about them. He has always made up for this by making us care about the situation they are in.
He obviously spent more time working on this in "Leviathon", his newest book. Although Westerfeld's strong suit remains world building and increasingly fantastic settings, he builds up his characters enough that the reader's emotional connection to them is stronger in "Leviathon."
Those looking for a revisit to "Uglies" or "Peeps" will be disappointed with this new steampunky direction, but I loved it. I think it actually may work better as a kids book than a teen, but there is plenty of action to suit both.
I highly recommend it!
