Real by Takehiko Inoue

Takehiko Inoue has expressed surprise that this manga series, which focuses on wheelchair basketball, became as popular as it did.

He shouldn't have been surprised. This is the first time I have read manga where I was immediately drawn in, and my attention didn't waiver. The characters are well developed, the story is intriguing and not too far fetched and the art is consistently good, even in the midst of manga's characteristic super-cartoony emotional outbursts and over-the-top moments.

The subject matter, wheelchair basketball, is handled with skill and obvious love by the author. Three boys who have had traumatic experiences: motorcycle accident, bone cancer, being hit by a car, all come together with their passion for the sport.

I have read the first two in the series, and I'm excited to continue on.
